Origin and history

Star Fruit, also known as carambola and kordoi is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to the India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The fruit is a berry of from about 10 cm and ellipsoidal shape with five longitudinal prominences; hence its name star fruit. The pulp of the fruit is yellow and contains few seeds inside.

Star Fruit is considered an antioxidant fruit due to its content of vitamin C, fumaric, succinic and tartaric acids, phenolic compounds, proanthocyanidins and carotenoids. It also contains fiber and provides few carbohydrates.

Its pleasant smell is produced by damascenonas, major contributor to the aroma of roses
