Origin and history

Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a small tree from Amazon rainforest. The fruits are red cherries with high vitamin C content.  Camu Camu is a source of minerals, such calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, sodium, and copper. Also, Camu Camu contains protein, carbohydrates, and fiber. This fruit has several traditional uses in Amazonian, and now it is being used in the food industry due its excellent nutritional properties and exquisite flavor and aroma

Recently, several studies have found in Camu Camu fruits amino acids, and a variety of phytochemicals, such as flavonoids, tannins, stilbenes, phenolic acids, anthocyanin, and lignans.

In vivo studies have shown potential benefits of Camu Camu to the strengthening of immune system, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects, antiobesity action, liver protection, promoting weight loss and improving cholesterol level.  Currently, studies are conducted to evaluate potential benefits arising from its phytochemical profile.
